The first roofs were simple and served a purpose: keep out the weather. Sod and thatch were followed by quarried materials and then manufactured products like asphalt and metal.

With the advent of hot tar roofing the first low slope or flat roofing systems were created as either a shedder or a collector roof. Warehouse type buildings favoured collector roofs where size would not accommodate the height required for a peeked roof, and shedder roofs were used on agricultural buildings using sloped roofs and utilizing the upper spaces for hay lofts.
